The Importance of Testing and Cleaning Smoke Detectors

July 20th, 2015 by ESS Staff

This picture is a great example of the importance of annual fire alarm testing and the cleaning of smoke detectors. This smoke detector was found in this condition during one of our annual inspections. You can visibly see in the picture how the dust has built up on it and is blocking the screen. Smoke detectors in this condition will either false alarm due to the amount of dust inside of the detector or they will not function the way they should in the event of a fire due to the blockage not allowing smoke to enter the chamber properly. These are serious issues that can be solved by simply having your fire alarm system tested and inspected each year. Please contact us with any questions.

Brrrrrrrrrr…….. It’s Cold Outside

January 16th, 2015 by ESS Staff

Everyone thinks of burglar alarm systems when it comes protecting your property from being broken into or vandalized.  These systems also have some very useful other functions.  With the winter season uopn us and the deep freeze of January and February what would happen to your home if your heating system were to fail and there was no one there to check on it?  The result would be frozen pipes and then serious water damage when those pipes thawed out.  With a low temp sensor in the house you could avoid this messy and costly situation.  These sensors are designed to go off when the house gets down to around 40 degrees giving you notification and time to get the heat back on before damge occurs.

Life Expectancy Of Smoke Detectors

August 5th, 2014 by ESS Staff

Smoke detectors are one of the most important safety features of your home. Properly installed, working smoke detectors will give you the early warning you need to safely escape from a fire. But how do you make sure your detectors are working? One important way is to replace them after 10 years. At the ten year mark there is roughly a 30% probability of failure before replacement. At 15 years, the chances are better than 50/50 that your detector has failed, and that seems too big a risk to take.
